Remember Gilbert Baker? No, neither do we. But Gilbert Baker created one of the most recognised symbol of homo-culture this century – the Rainbow Flag. The flag represents the six colours of the rainbow as a symbol of gay and lesbian community pride. It’s recognised by the International Congress of Flag Makers, and is flown above every shop, bar, strip-joint and sauna across the world.
Gilbert was in town last week to help celebrate 30 years of the flag at the Village, Soho. Absolut Colours helped to sponsor the event with free flowing cocktails for everyone. Here’s what he had to say:
A limited edition cocktail book – the ABSOLUT COLOURS Cocktail Collection – is also out now. It features drinks based on the six colors of the rainbow flag. Also, any funds raised from UK sales of the cocktail book will be donated to the registered charity Pride London. How’s about that then campers?

A symbol of gay identity doubles as product placement. Yeah, there’s a political statement for you. Awesome. I’m overcome by a real sense of community–must…. buy…. Absolut….
I think Gilbert Baker is an unimaginative thief he stole the Inca flag and called it the gay flag, he didn’t even bother to make any changes in design color or patern to distinguish the difference.
If he were really an artist he could have come up with a more original idea.
Something that soley (and maybe even better) represents the gay community not indigunus people from South America.
It’s a rainbow! It’s from a color spectrum… Old art is always build on new art. he did something positive…what have you done for gay culture?
