ANDREW PIERCE: “Why as a gay man, I agree with the Pope…”

In today’s Daily Mail’s Andrew Pierce writes how he agrees with the Pope’a views towards UK equality legislation. He says: “I believe that the Government’s decision to force the Church to abide by its equality legislation could hurt some of the most vulnerable members of our society – those whom I thought ministers had a duty to protect.”

He feels that children could be the real losers of “Harman’s obsessive drive to force the Church to embrace her doctrine of legalised social engineering”.

He adds: “But the effect of the legislation from Harman is that those Catholic adoption agencies now have to consider placing children with gay couples, even though it goes against their spiritual teachings, or inevitably close down. Some of the Catholic adoption agencies have reluctantly complied with the new legislation. But if others decide they cannot sacrifice their principles and bend to Harman’s diktats, decades of experience will be lost and many vulnerable children will lose the care and dedication that has served them so well in the past.”

Since when is bigotry a 'spiritual teaching'. Far from it.

It didn't take the Daily Mail's new pet gay long to go native!

So much for bringing its readers a new perspective.
  • Discrimination is discrimination PERIOD. Many young Catholic GLBT people are shown no support. The Catholic church thinks, that homosexuality is a choice... hence they are discriminated against. Where was the Catholic Church during slavery? If the church disagreed with the government, wouldn't they still have every right to keep their slaves? They're many factors in this scenario, including the funding, which many children and programs rely on, which the church threatens to pull back, meanwhile they're funding is coming from the public. Instead of the Pope or the church condemning homosexuality, why don't they address REAL issues, such as global poverty, wars, govt corruption, crime... they have a huge pulpit, yet they are focusing on silly things. I grew up Catholic, and now I'm ashamed and want nothing to do with the church!
  • it's a fair question to ask why the catholic church, which is a completely voluntary organisation, should be held to anti-discrimination guidelines in its own internal affairs that contradict its basic beliefs. no gay man is being forced to join it or be discriminated against by it. this seems a basic question of freedom of association and belief.
