Britneygate could be the end of G-A-Y

Reports of serious over-crowding on the main dancefloor which led to the police being called to Heaven for the first time in years could put the future of G-A-Y at Heaven as a venue for live acts into question.

Additionally there have been unconfirmed reports that MAMA Group – which own Heaven – have still yet to hqve the licence for the venue approved by Westminster Council – one of the strictest councils in the UK when it comes to operating a live venue. A situation where people were being trampled on and passing out will not bode well with the licencing committee.

Questions are also being raised about the suitability of Heaven as a place to host live events at their G-A-Y nights due to the layout of the venue. Heaven has a total capacity for 1625 people, but each of the different rooms have their own legal capacity also. For the main room this is for around 850 people – which includes the bar areas at the back and side.

When big name performers are signed to play at G-A-Y, there is a good chance that the majority of the crowd will want to watch the performance. How this will happen when the venue is at full capacity and where the capacity for the main room is just 850 (and less if you discount the bar areas), is going to be a difficult problem to solve for MAMA and Jeremy Joseph – and could ultimately lead to the night being un-able to bring in the big namers that it could do previously.

It’s unfortunate that a night that was supposed to put G-A-Y at Heaven firmly on the map, may ultimately lead to it’s downfall.

  • I've been hearing reports of clashes between gay and straight punter at Heaven, with security failing to protect the more flamboyant club creatures from gangs of marauding straight lads. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has experienced this. The least we can expect at a gay club is that we aren't subjected to homophobia. Email me at paulburston@timeout.com
