STEPHEN FRY ENDORSES “A DAY IN HAND”

News, Theatre by Alex Wood on November 22, 2009 at 2:24 pm

Gay superstar Stephen Fry has joined the likes of Boris Johnson in pledging his support for a day in hand, a campaign to encourage same sex hand-holding. Dave Watkins, the project’s founder started the movement because he wanted to “see more Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) people living their lives publicly without shame and to the full”.

At the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association (GALHA) lunch, Fry described the campaign as “the most touching thing that’s happened all year”. To take part, simply hold hands with a same sex partner, friend or even stranger and go public. Campaigners from across the world have been uploading photos of themselves out in public to the campaign site.

Fry’s endorsement of the campaign comes after increases in homophobic crime across London. Campaign founder, Dave Watkins is planning the last Saturday of each month as ‘International Same Sex Hand Holding Day’ to increase the visability of gay, lesbian, bi and trans couples.

There’s no need to worry about your straight friends either, they can also get involved with the campaign. Straights are not just welcome, but encouraged to get involved and pledge their support for same sex couples everywhere.

You can follow the campaign on Twitter here.
