Beenie Man – the nutcase Jamaican “artist” famed for such lyrics as “I’m dreaming of a new Jamaica, come to execute all the gays” and “Hang chi chi gal [lesbian] wid a long piece of rope” – has been invited to play at New Zealand’s Big Day Out festival 2010.
The rapper’s history of promoting anti-gay violence in his songs has since caused a public backlash towards festival organisers. But it gets better. Festival organiser Campbell Smith defended the inclusion of Beenie Man in the line up: “The Big Day Out’s core values include those of tolerance and understanding,” adding that since signing the Reggae Compassionate Act in 2007, Beenie Man has stayed true to his word and refrained from performing the offending songs.
A Facebook group, Standing up against Beenie Man at Big Day Out 2010, was set up to protest his participation and already has more than 1000 members.
