The Drill Hall in London and the Manchester arts festival Queerupnorth are gasping their last gasps due to recent funding cuts.

Axed

About 200 arts organisations are feeling the pinch after cuts to the Arts Council funding from April. The Drill Hall is set to lose about £250,000 annual grant (that’s 31 hip operations) while Queerupnorth may see £97,000 taken away.

Unless the council relents later this month, the Drill Hall may shut its doors and the Manchester festival will be cancelled. The Arts Council says the cuts intended to concentrate funding “on organisations of excellence while penalising the average” but will not say which groups will continue to receive support.

Cuts are thought to have been leveled at smaller groups, with critics accusing the Arts Council of targeting groups less able to defend themselves.
