HOMO-SELECTION: THE POWER OF SAME-SEX LIAISONS
News by Simon McD on December 9, 2009 at 11:07 am
There’s a great article in this month’s New Scientist which discusses homo-behaviour in animals and why it exists. Basically – same-sex sexual behaviour exists in zillions of species from monkey’s to albatrosses and locusts to toads, but what’s the point of as it doesn’t lead to the reproduction of the species. Or something like that.
The feature revolves around the work of evolutionary biologists Marlene Zuk and Nathan Bailey from The University of California, who published a paper that included examples of same-sex sexual behaviour in dozens of species. In it they suggest that same-sex behaviour could actually be one of the driving forces in some species evolution.
Oh I fall of my chair. Read the full feature here: http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20427370.800-homosexual-selection-the-power-of-samesex-liaisons.html?page=1
