LATIN AMERICA’S FIRST GAY WEDDING TAKES PLACE

Gay rights activists Jose Maria di Bello and Alex Freyre have taken part in the first legal same-sex marriage in Latin America. The ceremony took place in Ushuaia, capital of Argentina’s southern Tierra del Fuego state.

The couple originally planned to marry in capital Buenos Aires but were prevented by city officials. The marriage went ahead because Argentina’s constitution doesn’t state whether marriage must be between a man and a woman, and passes any decisions about same-sex marriage to local officials.

Governor of Tierra del Fuego, where the marriage took place, said that gay marriage is an important advance in human rights and social inclusion, and called the marriage a historic step forward.
