Lord Browne: “I was terrified about being known as gay”

Lorde Browne was the former Chief Exec of BP. He was ousted and outed in 2007 when allegations of his private life – ie that he was a homosexual and for the last four years supported his boyfriend – hit the headlines of happy-mag The Daily Mail.

The newspaper claimed that he used company assets and resources to support his boyfriend – allegations that were proved unfounded.

However, the proverbial shit hit the fan because in court he lied about how he met his boyfriend, which lead to him facing charges of perjury.

In a statement, he said to the press at the time: “In my 41 years with BP, I have kept my private life separate from my business life. I have always regarded my sexuality as a personal matter, to be kept private. It is a matter of deep disappointment that a newspaper group has now decided that allegations about my personal life should be made public.”

Which was nice of the Mail.

Anyway, the Radio 4 this morning had a great interview with him about that time.

In it he describes how and why he lied he was gay. It’s an interessant.
