MUSIC: NEW ROKK MIX TAPE
Music by Simon McD on February 10, 2009 at 11:23 pmWord up discotits, here’s some mixamatology for your listening pleasure.
Gimme Hope Diana is the new mix from London based ‘Rokk’ formerly of COCK and Hoxditch’s BOOMBOX, now of WORD and upcoming new night ‘RONNY’s’. “Its a mix of hope for the dancefloors of the future,” he says.
We agree. A chunkychops chander with a delicate boomblax beat definitely gets our funk faxing. Download it here:

Rokk started life at COCK the famous London homo nightspot that hit its dizzy heights in the early days of the Electroclash Boom alongside Nag Nag Nag. Touring with COCK internationally he developed his own take on the current electro wave mixing all ages of electro and pushing the boundaries of the constantly challenged London music scene.

Princess Julia, Tasty Tim and Rokk toured Europe damaging speakers as they moved from party to party and were featured in THE FACE 2003 for their contribution to the clubbing scene. At the same time Rokk, otherwise known as Paul Bryan originally from Nottingham, worked for Parlophone Records A&R dept with a large roster of artists including Gorillaz, Jamelia and Kylie commissioning some of the best remixes and championing lesser known remix talent. An early attempt to sign Robyn failed due to the short sightedness of Parlophone.
Leaving COCK he was approached by london club promoter Richard Mortimer to be resident at his now well documented club ‘Boombox’.
“It had an energy of its own that I couldn’t find in any of the club nights around,” says Rokk. “It’s a mammoth mouth of creativity and debauchery that you’ll only find in london’s East End. I love playing at Boombox ‘Its fuckin electric!!”
Rokk played weekly along side residents Jerry Bouthier and Matthew Stone. Guests included Justice, Busy P, Dj Mehdi, Bang Gang, Roisin Murphy, Kylie, Trevor Jackson and The Glimmers. Boombox took its unique party to Milan, Athens, New York, Paris amongst others and created havoc wherever it landed. Kylie also requested that Rokk commission remixes for her track ‘Boombox’ after her DJ spot at the club – to which he contributed a remix with Portugal based PIXEL 82 alongside, LA Riots, Revolte, JBAG and Big Face. He followed that up with a remix for WOW.
Since Boombox, Rokk has turned his hand to videos, creating a frenzy with his Webcam made video for Digitalism’s ‘Idealistic’. He’s working on music for Marios Schwabs upcoming fashion show and runs his own night WORD. He plays regulary on Londons alternative gay scene, Trailertrash and at new sunday night Ronnys’ as well as internationally at Electric Picnic (Ireland), Plano B (Portugal) and Paris Paris (Paris). Expect more djing, more remixes and more videos to come from Rokk in 2009.
We’re loving it. Check out more of him here: http://www.myspace.com/rokkk
