OBAMA BLAMED FOR GAY MARRIAGE FAIL

National gay rights activists in San Francisco have blamed President Obama and scare-mongering ads for the Maine voter’s rejection of a law that would have allowed gay couples to marry.

Activists have said they are frustrated that Obama didn’t speak out forcefully in support of Maine’s marriage law before Tuesday’s vote.

Evan Wolfson of Freedom to Marry said: “President Obama missed an opportunity to state his position against these discriminatory attacks with the clarity and moral imperative that would have helped in this close fight. The anti-gay forces are throwing millions of dollars into various unsubtle ads aimed at scaring people, so subtle statements from the White House are not enough.”

If voters in Maine had voted for the law, it would have been the sixth sate to legalise gay marriage, and the first to pass it through popular vote of the people. Other states passed gay marriage laws through court decisions or new legislation.

I think it's silly for Obama to be blamed for gay marriage failing... Great tactic, choose a scapegoat and point fingers to someone who is actually trying to help us... Obviously more can always be done, but we're dealing with an entire country and support is coming from Federal level, which we need.... but instead of pointing fingers and waiting..we have to work together to help....Proactive..instead of reactive...

When matters of principle are reduced to polling, democracy demonstrates its deepest flaw.

The “rule of the people” could someday decide to outlaw heterosexuality–or religion, or even polling. That would further prove its inadequacy.

Neither god nor nature says that homosexuality is unnatural. That some men are sexually attracted to other men, some women to other women, demonstrates that homosexuality is and forever has been as natural as heterosexuality.

Homosexuality is no more unnatural than being left-handed–and our society has almost overcome its prejudice against left-handedness.

Marriage is a convention which blesses conventional behavior. Convention: that says we “come together” in blessing the “coming together” of two indiviuduals.

At our best, we value “coming together.” That’s why we have words like “social” and “society,” “common” and “communion” and “community,” “free” and “friend,”
“college” and “collection” and “legislation”–and a set of little blocks that stick together called “Lego.”

Our “coming together” is the basic principle upon which human society is built. We need to recognise the principle–and quit all our perverse polling.
