REVIEW: A SINGLE MAN
Film, Highlights, Reviews by Rui Pilar on February 9, 2010 at 1:44 pmSet in Los Angeles in 1962, A Single Man, is the story of George Falconer, a 52 year old British college professor, played by Colin Firth, who is struggling to find meaning to his life after the death of his long time partner, Jim played by Matthew Goode. George dwells on the past and can’t see any point in life. The film follows him through a single day, where a series of events and encounters, ultimately leads him to decide if there is a meaning to life after Jim.
The story itself is interesting enough but Colin playing George makes it even more credible as it was incredibly well acted.
Isherwood writes in an extremely unassuming way about being gay – there’s almost something modern about it. He allowed his characters to have male lovers to seem mainstream at a time when it was very difficult.
The beautiful photography, the colours used in certain parts, all add to the intensity without being too in your face.
Overall, a beautiful movie visually, extremely well acted and of course full of style.
