SAME SEX CIVIL CEREMONIES PASSED IN CANBERRA
International, News, Pride by Simon McD on November 13, 2009 at 2:03 pmThe Australian Capital Territory has legalised civil ceremonies between same sex couples.
The new Bill allows gay and lesbian couples to hold a civil partnership through a legally binding ceremony in front of family and friends.
The guy who drafted the Bill, Shane Rattenbury, said the legislation was another step towards full equality for same sex couples in Australia, adding that although it is not marriage, the ACT parliament has done everything in its powers to take a step towards it.
However, some critics see the new legislation as unfair as it prevents heterosex couples and some transgender and transex couples from taking part.
Gay rights activists are now focussing their efforts towards preventing Prime Minister Kevin Rudd from overturning the Bill.
