SOUTH AFRICAN LESBIANS VICTIMS OF “CORRECTIVE RAPE”
News by HOMOVISION on March 13, 2009 at 1:59 pmThe Guardian reports this week how a rising tide of violence and rape is helping to surpress South African lesbian women.
The newspaper talked to lesbian women in townships in Johannesburg and Cape Town who said they were being deliberately targeted for rape and that the threat of violence had become an everyday ordeal.
Research released last year by Triangle, a leading South African gay rights organisation, revealed that a 86% of black lesbians from the Western Cape said they lived in fear of sexual assault. The group says it is dealing with up to 10 new cases of “corrective rape” every week.
One of the more high-profile cases of “corrective rape” involved the rape and murder of Eudy Simelane – a player from South Africa’s national female football squad. She was gang raped and then stabbed over 25 times in the face, chest and legs.
