STONEWALL HONOUR BOYZONE

Boyzone have been named entertainers of the year at the 2009 Stonewall Awards held at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The judges said that Stephen Gately’s coming out at the height of the band’s success contributed to raise awareness. Gately died last month while on holiday in Majorca with his partner Andrew Cowles.

The judges added that Boyzone made pop history with a video featuring a same-sex couple last year.

Other Stonewall award winners include Ben Bradshaw – Politician of the Year; Sarah Walters – author of the Little Stranger winning Writer of the Year; G3Mag – Publication of the Year; Samira Ahmed – Broadcaster of the Year for her report on corrective rape of lesbians in South Africa; the Rev. Scott Rennie – Hero of the Year; and the much loved Jan Moir – a late entry who won Bigot of the Year.
