Theatre review: WIG OUT!
Homo Economics, Theatre, Travel by Peter Broome on December 2, 2008 at 11:36 pmVisit www.royalcourttheatre.com for more information on free post-show events by Timberlina and DJ Hey Baylen, every Tuesday from 25th November, including themed bingo pub nights, song and spontaneous banter.
On Friday nights in December and Thursday nights in January from 9pm, Bourgeois and Maurice entertain in the Royal Court Cafe Bar with an arsenal of songs covering (almost) every issue known to humankind.
Over three evenings, the actor Bette Bourne talks to playwright Mark Ravenhill about his life and work. Starting out as a classical actor in the late 60’s, Bette found himself living in a drag commune in Notting Hill, touring Europe with the New York based Hot Peaches cabaret group and founding his very own cabaret troop, Bloolips, who redefined the term gay theatre creating their very own unique celebration of queerness. Wednesday 10th, Monday 15th & Wednesday 17th December 9.15pm.
There’s also a Paris Is Burning Film Screening on Saturday 13th December in the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs at 9:45pm. Filmed in the mid 1980’s, Jennie Livingston’s much-celebrated documentary chronicles the behind-the-scenes story of fashion-obsessed New Yorkers who created voguing and drag-balls and turned these raucous celebrations into a powerful expression of fierce personal pride. Winner of the 1991 Sundance Film Festival Grand July Prize, this is a rare opportunity to watch this classic on the big screen.
