What should one make of Katy Perry?

Katy Perry (nee Hudson) is the 23-year-old daughter of two Christian pastors. She was born and raised in Santa Barbara, California and, not being allowed to listen to secular music while growing up, in 2001 she released an album of Christian songs.

So far, so predictable. Fast forward to 2008, however, and Katy, sounding like a cross between Alanis, Lily and P!nk, is sitting atop the Billboard Hot 100 with a song all about KISSING GIRLS. It’s called…’I Kissed A Girl’. Here it is:

Surely not the behaviour expected of a pastor’s daughter (let alone the daughter of two pastors)? But it doesn’t stop there…she’s also had a song out about her boyfriend being really GAY. It’s called…’Ur So Gay’. Here it is:

We can’t remember the last time a gayer pair of songs was released in such quick succession by one artist (except, perhaps, for Erasure).

Yes, she’s a bit racey, and a bit controversial, but do we actually like Katy Perry? Is ‘I Kissed A Girl’ simply sensationalist nonsense? And on ‘Ur So Gay’, is she or is she not doing a Chris Moyles? You decide.

she's hardly a nazi...how can she be negative when she's got a massive fanbase here in the US? Doubt her record company would let her release that song if she meant it...if anything, it looks like she's dissing heterosexual guys...I dunno
